If you cannot download the QB or payroll updates even with admin rights, move to the next solution to fix the update error.

Solution 2 – Temporarily Disable the Anti-Virus App and Rename the Folders

Your anti-virus program might create restrictions while updating QB and the payroll service. Thus, to fix error 15106 when updating QuickBooks, remove antivirus restrictions on QuickBooks in the following manner –

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys on your keyboard to open the Task Manager. Then, go to the Processes tab and look for the [ANTIVIRUS].exe process. This antivirus program could be Spy Sweeper.exe or another program.
Go to the process section from here
  • Next, select End Process, then rename the QuickBooks update folder in the following manner –

NOTE: If you get an error while closing the antivirus program, uninstall it from the system.

  • Press the Windows key + E on your keyboard to open File Explorer, then follow this navigation path – C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks(year)\Components. If you are a 64-bit user, use this navigation path – C:\Program Files(x86)\Intuit\Quickbooks(year)\Components.

Once done, run the QB and payroll update process and check the status of the update error. If it persists, perform the next troubleshooting solution to fix it.

Solution 3 – Install QB Digital Signature Certificate

An unverified or expired digital signature certificate can be another reason for update issues in QB and payroll. To resolve it, you need to install a digital signature certificate by implementing the following steps –

  1. Firstly, go to the C Drive, then follow this navigation path – Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks.
  2. Now, right-click the QBW32.exe file, then select Properties, and click Digital Signature.

Solution 4 – Repair your QuickBooks

Update problems in QuickBooks can occur when the program is damaged or not installed correctly. To fix the program issues, you need to run a repair process using the QuickBooks Tool Hub utilities in the following manner –

Step 1 – Install QB Tool Hub

QuickBooks Tool Hub has a collection of essential tools and features that help resolve common issues within QuickBooks. Thus, to use its tools and repair QB, the first step is to download the QB Tool Hub program. To download and install the latest QuickBooks Tool Hub version, you can implement the steps given below –

  • Exit QuickBooks, then download the latest QuickBooks Tool Hub version (click HERE), and save the .exe setup file to an accessible location on the computer.

Note: If you already have a QB Tool Hub version installed on the PC, find the version you have at the bottom of the Home section. If you do not have the most recent (1.6.0.5) version installed, use these steps to install the latest program version.

  • Now, access the downloaded QuickBooksToolHub.exe setup file, follow the instructions to install the program, and agree to the terms and conditions.

After installing tool huh, use the Quick Fix My Program tool in the next section and run a program repair.

Step 2 – Run the Quick Fix My Program Utility

The Quick Fix My Program tool terminates background processes that QuickBooks Desktop uses. This tool can resolve general program issues by running a repair in the following manner –

  • Firstly, open the QB Tool Hub program, then move to the Program Problems section, and select the Quick Fix My Program tool.
Find Quick Fix My Program from here
  • Run the tool and repair QuickBooks Desktop, then once the tool stops, launch QBDT and try to access your data file.

Now, check if you can run the QB and payroll updates without any errors. However, if you encounter QB error code 15106, move to step 3 below.

Step 3 – Run the QB Install Diagnostic Utility

If running a repair with the Quick Fix My Program tool doesn’t fix the update error, you can use the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool. You can run this tool using the instructions below to resolve common installation issues –

  • In the QuickBooks Tool Hub program, go to the Installation Issues section and select the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool to open it.
Find QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool from here
  • Run the tool and let it repair the QB installation, which can take up to 20 minutes.
  • Wait for the tool to stop running, then restart your PC and launch QBDT again.

Now, try updating QuickBooks and the payroll service to ensure that the error code is fixed. However, if QuickBooks error 15106 persists, move to the next solution.

Solution 5 – Install QBDT Again

Sometimes, repairing QuickBooks might not fix the issues leading to the update error. In such cases, you can install a fresh version of QBDT. This process involves uninstalling QuickBooks and then installing and activating a new version in the following manner –

Requirements –

Download the installer for your QBDT version and have your license number handy to reinstall beforehand. Once done, implement the detailed steps given below to reinstall QB Desktop –

Step 1 – Remove/Uninstall QBDT

The first step is to remove QuickBooks Desktop from your PC –

  • Firstly, search for “Control Panel” in the Windows search bar and open it, then select Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.
uninstall your QuickBooks from here
  • Now, from the program list, select the QBDT version you want to uninstall, then click Uninstall/Change, Remove, and hit Next.

Note: If you can’t locate the “uninstall/change, remove” option, sign out and sign back into Windows with admin rights, then proceed with the uninstallation of QuickBooks.

Once QB is successfully uninstalled, reinstall the software following step 2 below.

Step 2 – Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop

To reinstall QB Desktop, make sure that the system requirements are met, then go through the following steps –

Note: QBDT will automatically install new folders and rename the old ones during the installation.

  • Download your QBDT version from the CAMPs or the download site, then save the .exe file at an easily accessible location on your PC.
  • Open the downloaded .exe setup file, then go through the on-screen prompts, accept the software license agreement, and click Next.
  • Now, enter the product and license numbers when asked, and choose Next.
  • Make sure you have an active and reliable internet connection before proceeding further.
  • Next, choose Express as the Installation Type option hit Next, and select Install.
Choose your installation type from here
  • When the installation process is complete, click Open QuickBooks, and proceed with the QBDT activation process.

After you have installed a fresh QuickBooks version, activate it in the next section.

Step 3 – Activate QB

  • Firstly, launch QuickBooks, then go to the Help menu and select the Activate QuickBooks Desktop option.
QuickBooks Premier Edition
  • Next, follow the on-screen steps to verify your info, and once the QBDT is activated, launch it again.

Once done, download the QuickBooks and payroll updates again and check if QuickBooks update error 15106 is resolved. If the error keeps appearing, move to the next section and disable the UAC.

Solution 6 – Turn Off the User Account Control Settings

The User Account Control improves security for users and protects the PC by minimizing exposure to threats. UAC also reduces the attack surface of your operating system. But sometimes, the UAC settings might interfere with QB updates. In such cases, disabling UAC using the instructions below becomes necessary to fix the error –

  • Open the Run window by pressing the Windows + R keys, then type Control Panel and click OK.
  • In the Control Panel, select User Accounts, click User Accounts (Classic View), and select the Change user account control settings option. If UAC asks, hit Yes to continue.
User account control settings
  • Next, move the slider and set it to Never Notify, then click OK to disable UAC.

Note: After the issues are fixed, enable UAC to prevent security risks on your computer.

Now, try updating QuickBooks and the payroll function and check the status of the error code. If QuickBooks error 15106 persists, move to troubleshooting solution 7.

Solution 7 – Configure the Windows Firewall and Internet Security Settings

Misconfigured Windows firewall settings can block QB from accessing the internet, leading to update issues. To fix this, you need to reconfigure the firewall and internet security settings for QuickBooks by using the detailed steps below –

Step 1 – Utilize QuickBooks File Doctor

QuickBooks File Doctor tool can help resolve network problems and configure the firewall automatically. To use this tool, install the latest QB Tool Hub version (see ‘Step 1: Install QB Tool Hub of ‘Solution 4: Repair QuickBooks’ above), then follow the steps below –

  • In QB Tool Hub, go to the Company File Issues section, select the QuickBooks File Doctor tool, and wait for it to open.

Note: The tool might take up to a minute to open, but if it isn’t accessible, search for “QuickBooks Desktop File Doc” in the Windows search bar and manually access QB File Doctor.

  • Further, open the drop-down menu and choose the company file you want to repair. If you can’t find the company file, click Browse and Search, then find and select the file you wish to repair.
  • Next, click Check your file and network, hit Continue, then proceed further and enter your QB admin credentials.
find "Check your file and network" from here"
  • Lastly, hit Next, wait for the file scan process to complete, then launch QuickBooks and access the company file.

Note: The tool usually takes up to 5 minutes to scan the file, depending on the size of the company file. Remember, the scan may sometimes say the process wasn’t successful, even if the issues are resolved.

Once done, check if you can download the latest QuickBooks and payroll updates without problems. But if you are unable to fix QuickBooks error 15106 even after using QuickBooks File Doctor, move to step 2 below.

Step 2 – Configure the Firewall Settings Manually

If QB File Doctor didn’t help with the update problems, manually configure the Windows firewall settings. To configure the firewall, add exceptions for QuickBooks by going through the following steps –

Add Firewall Exceptions for QB Ports

To prevent firewall restrictions, you can add exceptions for QuickBooks ports using the instructions below –

Note: The Windows firewall needs to be configured for each QBDT version you are using on the same PC. If you are using multiple versions, include each QB Desktop year’s ports in the Specific Local Ports field in Step 4 below.

  • Type “Windows Firewall” in the Windows search bar, select it and move to the Advanced Settings section.
  • Next, right-click Inbound Rules, click New Rule, and select the Port option.
  • Click Next and checkmark the TCP option (if not already selected).

  • Now, enter the specific ports (as per your QB version) in the Specific Local Ports field by referring to the following list –
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and later: 8019, XXXXX.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2019: 8019, XXXXX.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377.

Important: If you use QBDT 2019 or later versions, add the Dynamic Port Number to the exception list. These dynamic ports are assigned explicitly to QuickBooks during installation to provide the software with exclusive use of a particular port.

  • Implement the steps below to find the Dynamic Port Number for your QBDT version –
Instructions for Dynamic Port Number
  • Enter “QuickBooks Database Server Manager” in the Windows search panel, launch it, and go to the Port Monitor section.
  • ext, locate your QuickBooks Desktop version, note the Port Number, and include it in the port exceptions list.

Note: If you use QBDT 2019 or future versions, you can modify the port by selecting Renew. To renew the port number, select Scan Now from the Scan Folders menu, then set the Windows firewall permissions again.

  • After adding the port number, click Next, select Allow the Connection, and click Next again.
  • Once all the profiles are checkmarked (if asked), hit Next, create a new rule named “QBPorts(year),” and click Finish.
  • Lastly, create Outbound Rules by following steps 1 to 7, but ensure that you select Outbound Rules instead of Inbound Rules in Step 2.

After creating the rules and saving them, check if you can update QB and the payroll service without errors. However, if the error persists, add firewall exceptions for QuickBooks .exe files by following the next section.

Add Exceptions for QuickBooks Executable Files

You need QuickBooks executable files to perform different tasks in the app. You must add firewall exceptions for these executable files by following the steps below –

  • Open the Windows search bar, type “Windows Firewall,” access it, and navigate to the Advanced Settings tab.
  • Next, right-click the Inbound Rules option, click New Rule, and select Program.
  • Hit Next, select This Program Path, then click Browse and choose an executable file from the referred table below –
