Solution 1 – Download QB and Payroll Tax Table Updates as an Admin

Proper admin rights are required to perform certain functions in QB. Lack of these rights can lead to errors while downloading updates, like QB error 15106. To fix this, download the latest QB Desktop updates by following the steps below –

  • Exit your company files and QuickBooks, then right-click the QB Desktop icon and select the Run as Administrator option.
  • When the “Do you want to allow this program to make changes to your computer?” message appears, select Yes, then go to the Help tab.

Step 1 – Remove/Uninstall QBDT

The first step is to remove QuickBooks Desktop from your PC –

  • Firstly, search for “Control Panel” in the Windows search bar and open it, then select Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.

  • Now, from the program list, select the QBDT version you want to uninstall, then click Uninstall/Change, Remove, and hit Next.

Note: If you can’t locate the “uninstall/change, remove” option, sign out and sign back into Windows with admin rights, then proceed with the uninstallation of QuickBooks.

Once QB is successfully uninstalled, reinstall the software following step 2 below.

Step 2 – Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop

To reinstall QB Desktop, make sure that the system requirements are met, then go through the following steps –

Note: QBDT will automatically install new folders and rename the old ones during the installation.

  • Download your QBDT version from the CAMPs or the download site, then save the .exe file at an easily accessible location on your PC.
  • Open the downloaded .exe setup file, then go through the on-screen prompts, accept the software license agreement, and click Next.
  • Now, enter the product and license numbers when asked, and choose Next.
  • Make sure you have an active and reliable internet connection before proceeding further.
  • Next, choose Express as the Installation Type option hit Next, and select Install.

  • When the installation process is complete, click Open QuickBooks, and proceed with the QBDT activation process.

  • In the Control Panel, select User Accounts, click User Accounts (Classic View), and select the Change user account control settings option. If UAC asks, hit Yes to continue.

Step 1 – Utilize QuickBooks File Doctor 

QuickBooks File Doctor tool can help resolve network problems and configure the firewall automatically. To use this tool, install the latest QB Tool Hub version (see ‘Step 1: Install QB Tool Hub of ‘Solution 4: Repair QuickBooks’ above), then follow the steps below –

  • In QB Tool Hub, go to the Company File Issues section, select the QuickBooks File Doctor tool, and wait for it to open.

Note: The tool might take up to a minute to open, but if it isn’t accessible, search for “QuickBooks Desktop File Doc” in the Windows search bar and manually access QB File Doctor.

  • Further, open the drop-down menu and choose the company file you want to repair. If you can’t find the company file, click Browse and Search, then find and select the file you wish to repair.
  • Next, click Check your file and network, hit Continue, then proceed further and enter your QB admin credentials.

Step 2 – Configure the Firewall Settings Manually

If QB File Doctor didn’t help with the update problems, manually configure the Windows firewall settings. To configure the firewall, add exceptions for QuickBooks by going through the following steps –

Note: The Windows firewall needs to be configured for each QBDT version you are using on the same PC. If you are using multiple versions, include each QB Desktop year’s ports in the Specific Local Ports field in Step 4 below.

  • Type “Windows Firewall” in the Windows search bar, select it and move to the Advanced Settings section.
  • Next, right-click Inbound Rules, click New Rule, and select the Port option.
  • Click Next and checkmark the TCP option (if not already selected).

  • Now, enter the specific ports (as per your QB version) in the Specific Local Ports field by referring to the following list –
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and later: 8019, XXXXX.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2019: 8019, XXXXX.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377.

Important: If you use QBDT 2019 or later versions, add the Dynamic Port Number to the exception list. These dynamic ports are assigned explicitly to QuickBooks during installation to provide the software with exclusive use of a particular port.

  • Implement the steps below to find the Dynamic Port Number for your QBDT version –

  • Enter “QuickBooks Database Server Manager” in the Windows search panel, launch it, and go to the Port Monitor section.

Note: If you use QBDT 2019 or future versions, you can modify the port by selecting Renew. To renew the port number, select Scan Now from the Scan Folders menu, then set the Windows firewall permissions again.

  • After adding the port number, click Next, select Allow the Connection, and click Next again.
  • Once all the profiles are checkmarked (if asked), hit Next, create a new rule named “QBPorts(year),” and click Finish.
  • Lastly, create Outbound Rules by following steps 1 to 7, but ensure that you select Outbound Rules instead of Inbound Rules in Step 2.

After creating the rules and saving them, check if you can update QB and the payroll service without errors. However, if the error persists, add firewall exceptions for QuickBooks .exe files by following the next section.

Add Exceptions for QuickBooks Executable Files

You need QuickBooks executable files to perform different tasks in the app. You must add firewall exceptions for these executable files by following the steps below –

  • Open the Windows search bar, type “Windows Firewall,” access it, and navigate to the Advanced Settings tab.
  • Next, right-click the Inbound Rules option, click New Rule, and select Program.
  • Hit Next, select This Program Path, then click Browse and choose an executable file from the referred table below –

  • Hit Next, click Allow the Connection, then select Next again, and if a popup appears, ensure there is a checkmark next to all profiles.
  • Select Next, save the file exception as “QBFirewallException(name.exe),” and create Outbound Rules. Follow steps 1 to 4 above to create Outbound Rules for the .exe files. While creating these rules, ensure to choose Outbound Rules instead of Inbound Rules in step 2.

After creating the rules for the executable files, relaunch QuickBooks and run the QB and payroll updates. Now, if you still encounter QuickBooks Desktop error 15106, move to the next solution.

Solution 8 – Enable QuickBooks Desktop FCS

The File Copy Service (FCS) in QuickBooks is responsible for initiating and executing the update process. Thus, you need to enable the service using the instructions below to ensure you can download the QB updates without any issues –

  • Firstly, press the Windows + R keys to open the Run window, then type COMPMGMT.MSC into the command box, and click OK.
  • Once the Computer Management Window opens, select Services and Applications, then click Services.

  2. Next, click Map network drive and select a drive letter in Drive.

  2. Now, select Reconnect at sign-in to keep the drive mapped every time you sign in to your computer, and click Finish.

Solution 10 – Fix Damaged Windows Files
