Solution 6 – Configure Windows Firewall and Anti-Virus Settings

You might get QuickBooks error H505 due to the firewall blocking the connection. These restrictions can prevent QB from accessing the internet. By configuring the Windows firewall, you can remove the blockages and run the multi-user mode seamlessly. Follow the steps given below to configure the firewall and anti-virus settings for QuickBooks

Step 1 – Make Use of the QuickBooks File Doctor Tool

QuickBooks File Doctor is an essential utility that helps fix company file and network problems in QB. To run this tool, make sure QB Tool Hub is installed on the PC (see ‘Step 1: Download & Install QB Tool Hub’ in ‘Solution 2: Run the QB Database Server Manager Utility’ above), then follow the steps below –

  • In QuickBooks Tool Hub, move to the Company File Issues menu, select the QuickBooks File Doctor, and wait for the tool to open.

Note: The tool can take about a minute to open, but if it doesn’t open, search for “QuickBooks Desktop File Doctor in the Windows search bar and open it manually.

  • Next, from the drop-down menu, pick the company file you want to repair. If you can’t locate the file, select Browse and Search, locate the QB company file, and select it.
  • Further, select the Check your file and network option and click Continue.
Check your file and network like this
  • Enter your admin credentials, select Next, and wait for the scan process to end, then open QuickBooks Desktop.

Note: The scan process can take up to 5 minutes, depending on the company file size. Sometimes, the scan may say it was unsuccessful, even if the company file and network issues are fixed.

Now, open QuickBooks Desktop in multi-user mode and check if you can access the company file on the network. If the error persists, manually configure the firewall in step 2.

Step 2 – Manually Configure Windows Firewall

If you aren’t able to resolve the network issues by using QB File Doctor, manually configure the firewall. Create exception rules for QuickBooks to allow it to access the internet without restrictions. Follow the detailed steps given below to create the firewall exceptions –

Make Exception Rules for QuickBooks Ports

Create firewall port exceptions by implementing the steps mentioned below –

Note: If you use multiple QB Desktop versions on the same PC, you need to configure the Windows firewall for each version. Additionally, in step 4 below, include each version’s ports in the Specific Local Ports field.

  • In the Windows search bar, type “Windows Firewall,” open it, and go to the Advanced Settings menu.
  • Next, right-click Inbound Rules, choose New Rule, and select Port.
  • Hit Next and make sure TCP is checkmarked, then refer to the list below and enter the specific ports (as per your QB version) in the Specific Local Ports field-
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and later: 8019, XXXXX.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2019: 8019, XXXXX.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382.
    • QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377.
Way to select specific local ports

Important: QuickBooks Desktop 2019 and future versions use dynamic ports that are specifically assigned during installation to provide exclusive use of a particular port. If you use any of these QB versions, include their dynamic port number.

  • To get your QB Dynamic Port Number, follow these steps-
    • Access the Windows Start menu, then enter “QuickBooks Database Server Manager” in the search panel and open it.
    • In the Port Monitor tab, find your QuickBooks Desktop version and note down the Port Number.

Note: If you are using QBDT 2019 and future versions, you can change the assigned port number by selecting Renew. To renew the port number, select Scan Now from the Scan Folders tab and reset the firewall permissions.

  • Add the port number to the port exceptions list, select Next, and click Allow the Connection.
  • Click Next, make sure all profiles are checkmarked (if asked), then select Next and create a new rule named “QBPorts(year).”
  • Click Finish, and once the rule is created, create Outbound Rules for QB ports. For this, follow steps 1 to 6 above, but select Outbound Rules in step 2 instead of Inbound Rules

Once the exception rules are successfully created and saved, run QuickBooks in a multi-user mode and check if the error is fixed. If not, create exceptions for executable files in the next section.

Create Exceptions for QB Executable Files

QuickBooks Executable files (.exe) are used to perform various functions in the application. To create exceptions for these executable files, go through the following steps –

  • Search for “Windows Firewall” in the Windows search bar, open the firewall, and select Advanced Settings.
  • Right-click Inbound Rules, select New Rule, click Program, and hit Next.
  • Select This Program Path, then select Browse and choose an executable file from the table referred to below-

  • Further, hit Next, select Allow the Connection, then hit Next again.
  • Ensure that all the profiles are marked (if required), select Next, then save the file exception rule as “QBFirewallException(name.exe).”
  • Lastly, create Outbound Rules in the same manner (see steps 1 to 5). Remember to choose Outbound Rules instead of Inbound Rules in step 2, then save the rule.

After the exceptions are created for executable files, rerun QuickBooks in a multi-user environment and check if error H505 is eliminated. However, if you still encounter the error, move to step 3 and configure the anti-virus app.

Step 3 – Configure the Anti-Virus Program

Configuring the anti-virus program will ensure that QuickBooks has proper permissions. You can edit the anti-virus settings to ensure QuickBooks is able to access the internet without any interference from the anti-virus software. To configure the program, follow the steps specific to your particular antivirus program. You can go to the official website of the anti-virus software you are currently using or contact your software vendor to learn how to edit the settings.

Once the program is configured, check if the blockages and restrictions are removed. Rerun QuickBooks in a multi-user mode, but if error H505 persists, move to the next solution.
