1099 Stuck in the Process of Preparing in QuickBooks

Let’s say that 1099’s are set up and ready to e-file. Moreover, you have confirmed that the company’s information and contractor’s information are correct.  Now, you tap on Next, reach the e-file screen, tap on the e-file, and clear the cache.

You receive a confirmation message that says, “Way to go!  We’ll handle those 1099s from here“.  Now, when you tap on View submitted 1099s, you will reach the Sign-in screen. When you log in to the Intuit account and look under the Taxes tab, you find that nothing shows under 1099 filings.

If you return to Contractors, you might find that the 1099s you need to file still show up as being prepared. If this persists, it can be quite time-consuming, and frustrating and can delay your tax filing by large.

However, this isn’t the only kind of issue that arises when a user tries to file a 1099.

Why is the Intuit e-file Service Not Working?

There are a handful of possible reasons why you can’t e-file 1099s using Intuit e-file service or can’t see 1099 e-files you submitted a while ago:

  • The 1099s are probably not setup or not ready to be filed
  • The company or contractor information entered is not correct.
  • Some contractors you are trying to file have an invalid zip code or an invalid state.
  • The stored cache in the browser you are using to e-file 1099 is causing a problem.
  • Intuit-specific cookies stored in the browser are causing a problem.
  • Data damage in QuickBooks company file is preventing you from filing 1099s.

How to Fix the Intuit 1099 e-file Service Not Working Issue

Now that we have gone through the major reasons why intuit e-file service is not working, let us go about fixing this issue.

However, first, let us show you how to check the 1099 filing status in QuickBooks Online so that you know if the 1099s have been successfully filed or are stuck as processing.

1.     View the 1099 Filing Status

You can view the status of the 1099 under Filing status. These can be of three types:

Not Submitted: This shows that the 1099 form hasn’t been e-filed with the IRS, and you can revise and make further changes as needed.

Submitted: This shows that the 1099 forms have been e-filed to the IRS. You might see it as ‘Sent’ on your screen. If you want to revise it, a manual amendment will need to be filed.

Received by IRS: This shows that the IRS has received the 1099 forms. The IRS might be processing the 1099s or might have already approved it. Once they are done, you will be confirmed via an email in around a week.

If your 1099 can’t be submitted to the IRS using Intuit e-file service, continue the troubleshooting to fix that.

2.     Check Contractor Information

If the contractor information, such as the address, is incorrect, Intuit won’t be able to e-file 1099 for you. Sometimes, the state or zip codes are incorrect. Therefore, you need to verify that all the information is correct.

Here is how you can check the contractor information and the address.

  • Tap on the Expenses menu.
  • Now, navigate to the Contractors tab.
  • Now, select the contractor profile for which you want to e-file the 1099.
  • Check their address.
  • Tap on their Personal details to open it.
  • If you need to, update their address.
  • When you are done, tap on Save.

Now, try filing the 1099s again. However, if the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

3.     Specific Steps for QuickBooks Desktop Users

Let’s say you use QuickBooks Desktop.  When you go to the File menu, Vendors, 1099 Forms... nothing shows up when you hover your mouse and you cannot get to the Print/E-file 1099s section to start working on 1099s.
