Error: Unknown Service Type

Let us look at an issue a user faced when they tried to ship internationally via FedEx using Shipping Manager in QuickBooks Enterprise 22.00. When they tried to create a label, they got the error: Unknown Service Type.

This was the case regardless of the service they used.

If you are facing a similar issue with the QuickBooks Shipping Manager, you can reach out to FedEx.

There is a chance that the unknown service type error in the Shipping Manager might stem from an issue in the script.

QuickBooks Shipping Manager is calling for:

<ServiceType>FEDEX_INTERNATIONAL_PRIORITY_EXPRESS</ServiceType>

whereas FedEx identifies this service as:

<ServiceType>INTERNATIONAL_PRIORITY</ServiceType>

and so on for the rest of the services.

There’s a workaround you can give a try:

  • Use the F2 function at the bottom center of the Shipping Manager window.
  • Check one service at a time

This approach uses the correct identifier so FedEx can return a result.

Error: Start-tag name “br” does not match end-tag name “H2”

When you try to print a label, you might see the following error message:

Start-tag name “br” does not match end-tag name “H2.”

The QuickBooks might say there is an update. However, when you try to update it, the application crashes. Let us see why is QuickBooks Shipping Manager not working.

This might be a result of a damaged Shipping Manager account.

Why is the Shipping Manager Not Working in this case?

The root cause of the error might lie in the folder and/or database damage or permissions. The Shipping Manage database must be in the shared company files folder. Therefore you need two user license versions of QuickBooks at least.

Let us now see how to correct this error.

  • Restart both the host computer and the network computer.
  • Now, open QuickBooks on the host computer.
  • Confirm that the Shipping Manager works.
  • If it works, the database is not damaged.
  • Leave QuickBooks open.

Once done, follow the steps below in the QuickBooks on the host computer:

  • Click on Help followed by About QuickBooks.
  • Check and verify that User Licenses says 2 or greater in the green window.
  • Note the license number. Leave QuickBooks open.

After that, go to your network computer and follow the steps below:

  • Open QuickBooks and check if the company file works on the host computer (if it works, the “Company Files” folder permissions are okay).
  • Leave QuickBooks open.
  • Tap on Help and About QuickBooks.
  • Check and make sure that the license number matches the license number for the host computer in the green window.
  • Also, make sure that the User Licenses says 2 or greater.

Return to the host computer and follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Shipping Manager Settings, then click on Connection Settings.
  2. Connect Via Network box, and confirm that the Shipping Manager database is located at “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shipping Manager v4\Database.v4” (or a path other than the default). Take note of the Shipping Manager path.
  3. Confirm that the company file is located at “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files” (or a path other than the default). Take note of the company files path.
  4. Close QuickBooks on both computers.
  5. Open the “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\” folder or the Shipping Manager path noted in step 1.
  6. Copy the “Shipping Manager v4” folder. Open the “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files” folder or the company files path noted in step 2.
  7. Paste the “Shipping Manager v4” folder into the “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files” folder.
  8. Open QuickBooks. In the “Shipping Manager Settings>>Connection Settings>>Connect Via Network” box, enter the path “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files\Shipping Manager v4\Database.v4\” Click on OK or Save.
  9. Go back to QuickBooks main screen, then close QuickBooks.
  10. On the network computer, open QuickBooks, select “Shipping Manager Settings>>Connection Settings>>Connect Via Network,” then enter “\\[host computer name or IP address]\SharedDocs\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files\Shipping Manager v4\Database.v4\” in the block. Click OK or Save.
  11. Go back to the QuickBooks main screen.

It is optional, but you can also delete the UPS accounts in Shipping Manager on the network computer and then repeat the last two steps.
