Section 1: QuickBooks Unrecoverable Error – Application Closes Unexpectedly

Let us see how to repair QuickBooks Desktop if it keeps on crashing or closing unexpectedly. Follow the solutions given in this guide and resolve the QuickBooks unrecoverable error.

1.     Launch QuickBooks with All Windows Closed

If a large report or several windows are set to automatically open, it might lead to the QuickBooks unrecoverable error. When you close your company file, QuickBooks re-opens any windows left open.

Therefore, you need to open QB Desktop with all windows closed:

First, suppress the QuickBooks Desktop when opening it.

  • Close all QuickBooks windows and go to the Desktop.
  • Press and hold the Ctrl key.
  • With the Ctrl key still held, double-click on the QB icon to launch it.
  • Don’t let go of the Ctrl key before the No Company Open window opens.

Now, let us suppress QuickBooks while opening the company file.

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  • When you see the No Company Open window, choose your company file.
  • Now, press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and tap Open. Only let go of ALT after the company file opens. (If QuickBooks prompts you to sign in, let go of the ALT key and provide the password. Now, press and hold ALT again and select OK.

2.     Log in With a Different QuickBooks User

Your user profile might be corrupt, which is why QuickBooks closes unexpectedly. To resolve this, log in to the QuickBooks company file using another user.

Here is how you can create a new user in QuickBooks Desktop.

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Tap on the Company, and choose Set Up Users and Passwords.
  • Click on Set Up Users.

(If you use QuickBooks Enterprise, tap on the Company menu and choose Users. Now, tap on Set Up Users and Roles.)

  • Now, tap on Add User…
  • Provide the username and password and click on Next.

Remember not to use the same username as the damaged user.

  • Customize the user profile accordingly.
  • Finally, select Finish.
  • Now, tap on File and choose Close Company/Logoff.
  • Log into the QB company using the user login credentials you just created.

However, if the QuickBooks Unrecoverable error XXXXX XXXXX persists, continue to the next solution.

3.     Create a New Windows User with Admin Rights

You know that you need admin rights to run various QuickBooks functions. To make sure that the unrecoverable error is not due to a corrupt Windows user profile, let us create a new admin user in Windows and run QuickBooks with that.

a.      If you use Windows 10 or newer

  • Tap on Start, and choose Settings.
  • Now, click on Account, and choose Family & Other Users.
  • Go to the Other Users section and tap on Add someone else to this PC.
  • Now, tap on the I don’t have this person’s sign-in information option.
  • Select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
  • Provide a name and password and tap on Finish.
  • Now, click on the account you just created to highlight it and choose Account Type.
  • Finally, select Administrator and hit OK.

b.      If you use Windows Server 2012 and newer

Before you perform the following steps, it is wise to consult an IT expert.

  • Select Server Manager and open it.
  • Choose Tools and navigate to Computer Management.
  • Click on Local Users and Groups to expand it and choose Groups.
  • Now, double-click the Administrator Groups. This will open the Administrator Properties window.
  • Choose Add.
  • You will see the Select Users, Computers, Service Accounts, or Groups window.
  • Here, enter the account you wish to add to the local admin groups.
  • Tap on OK.

Finally, sign out of your current user and sign in to Windows with the new admin user you just created. Now, launch QuickBooks Desktop and check if the software works well or closes suddenly. If QB Desktop keeps crashing or shutting down, proceed with the next troubleshooting steps.

4. Move the Company file to Another Folder

QuickBooks might crash or close unexpectedly if the folder or the path to the company file is damaged.

To check this, let us copy the company file to a different folder and open it from there.

  • Close all QuickBooks windows.
  • Go to the Desktop.
  • Right-click on the empty space on your Desktop.
  • Choose New, followed by Folder. Name the new folder as QBTEST.
  • Now, go to the folder where the company file is stored.
  • Right-click on the company file and choose Copy.
  • Now, open the QBTEST folder you just created and paste the company file here.
  • Open QuickBooks Desktop in the No Company Window.
  • Choose Open a company file and select Browse.
  • Browse for the copy of the company file pasted in the QBTEST folder and open it.

Check if QuickBooks Desktop works fine.

  1. If QuickBooks works fine now, the problem is the location where the company file is stored. It might be possible that the folder or the drive is corrupt. You can create a new folder in the same drive, copy the company file to that folder, and open the company file from there. If that doesn’t work, try creating another folder on another drive, copying it, and opening the company file from there.
  2. If QuickBooks closes unexpectedly, proceed to the next solution.

5. Sign into a Sample Company File

Here is how you can open a sample file

  • Close all QuickBooks windows.
  • Now, go to the Desktop and Press and hold the Ctrl key.
  • With the Ctrl key still held, double-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon.
  • Do not let go of the Ctrl key before the No Company Open window opens.
  • Now, in the No Company Open window, choose Open a sample file.
  • Choose a sample company file of your preference and open it.

Check if the QuickBooks unrecoverable error XXXXX XXXXX (ten-digit random codes) appears.

a.      If QuickBooks works well in the sample company file

  • Run, verify and rebuild data utility on the company file. Once done, launch QuickBooks again.
  • Restore a recent backup of the company file if you have one. However, in this case, you will lose the progress you made after you made the backup
  • Recover lost data using the QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery tool.

b.      If QuickBooks closes unexpectedly in the sample company file

If the error persists in the sample company file as well, the issue lies in the program. Proceed to the next step to repair QB Desktop.

6. Repair QuickBooks Program

QuickBooks Tool Hub contains tools that you can use to repair your QuickBooks program. We have a dedicated guide with detailed instructions one can follow to repair QuickBooks Desktop. Follow these instructions and once done, restart QBDT.

However, even after repairing QuickBooks Desktop, continue to the next step.

  • Now, open the QB Tool Hub.
  • Click on the Installation Issues tab.
  • Choose QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.
  • Allow the tool around 20 minutes to finish repairing.

Section 2: QuickBooks Unrecoverable Error When Opening Company File on Workstation

Let us say you see QuickBooks unrecoverable when you access the company data file on the workstation. This can be caused by different reasons, such as:

  • Hosting mode is not correctly configured on the server and workstations
  • QBCF Monitor service is running on a workstation
  • QuickBooks program is damaged
  • The system has missing or damaged components that QuickBooks requires.

To fix this, follow the same steps listed in Section 1. Before that, make sure to update QuickBooks Desktop, and create a backup of the company file, and additionally, ensure two important things.

1.     Prevent QBCFMonitorService from Re-Starting on Workstations

The QBCFMonitorService must only be running on the host computer and not the workstations.

Therefore, follow these steps to prevent the QBCFMonitorService:

  • Press the Windows + R. This will launch the Run window.
  • Enter the services.msc in the search box. Tap on OK.
  • Find the QBCFMonitorService in the list. Double-click it, which will open the Properties

Sometimes QuickBooks crashes and shows an unrecoverable error when you are opening a PDF file.

It can happen when you are reconciling with the help of an older version of Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. QuickBooks Unrecoverable Errors mostly show up when you have Adobe Reader 10.0, 9.0, or 8.0 installed on the computer and have selected Display PDF in Browser preference.

However, if you are using a more recent version of Adobe, such as Adobe 11.0 (XI), it won’t have the option to display PDFs in the browser and display them outside of the browser by default. This fixes the unrecoverable error in QuickBooks.

However, if you are an Adobe Acrobat 10.0, 9.0, or 8.0 user and don’t want to spend money upgrading it, proceed to step 2.

Here is how you can upgrade Adobe Reader:

  • Choose About Adobe Reader.
  • If you have Adobe Reader 8.0, 9.0, or 10.0, download Adobe Reader 11.0.

  • In the Web Browser Options section, Clear the selection for Display PDF in Browser Preference.
  • Tap on OK.
  • Now, restart Adobe and resume reconciliation.

This will resolve the unrecoverable error when you are viewing reconciliation reports in Adobe.

Section 4: Unrecoverable Error When You Click on a Transaction for Reconciliation

Let us check your company file for data damage and fix them. For that, run verify and rebuild data utility on the company file.

When you are done, restart QuickBooks Desktop and sign into the company file. However, if the QuickBooks unrecoverable error persists, continue to the next step.

2.     Restore a Recent Backup of the Company File

Do you have a recent backup of the company file? If so, restore it. However, remember that by restoring a backup of the company file, you will lose any progress you made after you created the backup.

Here is how you can restore the backup:

  • Open QBDT and go to File.
  • Choose Open or Restore Company.
  • Now, tap on the Restore a backup copy. Click on Next.
  • Choose Local Backup, followed by Next.
  • Browse for the backup company file, which will look like [Your company name].qbb.
  • Choose the folder where you want to restore the company file.
  • Select Open.

Once done, open the company file you just restored in QuickBooks and check if the application works smoothly. However, if it crashes whenever you click on a transaction, move to the next solution.

  • Unrecoverable Error 00000 16133
  • Unrecoverable Error 00000 41953
  • Unrecoverable Error 00000 42045

However, most of the time, the import process will continue regardless of these errors. Once the import is finished, QuickBooks Desktop will display a report of the changes that were not able to be imported and explain why. You can manually enter these changes into the company file.

Here are three ways you can approach the QuickBooks unrecoverable error while importing accountant’s changes.

Method 1: Resume the Import and Manually Enter Thereafter

  • Click on Send whenever you see an error message.
  • Tap on OK to resume import.
  • Once the import is complete, you will see the list of the changes that couldn’t be imported.
  • Manually enter those changes.

However, if this method doesn’t work for you, move to the next one.

Method 2: Check Data for Damages and Recreate Change File

Before you continue with the steps listed below, make sure your QuickBooks is up-to-date.

  • First, restore a recent backup or the backup you created before you imported the accountant’s changes.
  • Now, run the verify and rebuild data on the company file.
  • Finally, create the change file in the accountant’s copy in QuickBooks Desktop or ask the accountant to send the change file again.

Use the new accountant’s change file to import the changes into the company file. However, if the unrecoverable error comes up again, continue to method 3.

Method 3: Start All Over Again and Recreate Accountant’s Copy

If nothing works, there is no resort but to abandon all the changes you or the accountant made in the accountant’s copy.

Remove the accountant’s restriction from your company file. This will cause you to lose any change suggested by the accountant. Now, repair data damages in the company file.

Once you are done, recreate the accountant’s copy and send it to your accountants. When they send you the accountant’s changes file, import the changes to your company file.
